Semester One

Quarter One and Two-- 

Week One

• Tuesday: Review syllabus and class expectations
• Wednesday: Cultural Literacy: The List
• Thursday: Why Do Americans Act Like That?
• Friday: The Nacerima

Week Two

• Monday: Finish Nacerima article, start Literary Analysis Review: LRJ Review, Critical Analysis of Poetry 
• Tuesday: Critical Analysis of Poetry written on An Elementary Class Room in a Slum 
• Wednesday: Critical Analysis of Prose on Chekhov short story "A Problem."
• Thursday: Discussion of critical analysis of prose and poetry.  Prepare for in class written commentary
• Friday: In class written commentary, turn in LRJ. 

Week Two-Three: Writing workshop and Comparative mythology—excerpts from The Iliad, The Odyssey, Ramayana, Sundiata, Aeneid

• Monday: Hero's Journey Notes
• Tuesday: Finish Hero's Journey Notes, watch excerpt of Joseph Campbell video "The Hero's Journey."
• Wednesday-Friday:  Assign Biography assignment, read sample biographies, write LRJ entries on sample biographies.

Week Four: Continue comparative mythology

• Monday-Tuesday: Flood Myths-- The Walam Olum, Hmong Creation Myth, Aztec Creation Myth, Epic of Gilgamesh (Sumarian), Yoruba Creation/Flood Myth, the story of Noah, Flood Myth Comparison Chart.
• Wednesday: Finish Flood Myths, read Chapter one and three in Edith Hamilton's Mythology. 
• Thursday: Edith Hamilton's Mythology.
• Friday: Compartive Mythology Assignment

Week Five:

• Monday: Google Documents, Comparative Mythology Assignment
• Tuesday: Comparative Mythology Assignment
• Wednesday: excerpts from The Iliad
• Thursday: exceprts from the Odyssey
• Friday: Ramayana, Sundiata, Aeneid

• Week Six: Comparative Mythology Assignment Presentations.  The epic tradition and Antigone and the beginnings of English—excerpts from Beowulf
• Week Seven: The Medieval period/early Renaissance—The Inferno, excerpts from The Decameron, The Canterbury Tales, Everyman
• Week Eight-Nine: Biography Paper Due October 20th!  The Renaissance and Dr. Faustus

Quarter Three and Four--

•    Shakespeare: Macbeth and As You Like It

•    17th and 18th Century European literature
