English Department Policy

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Over the past few years, Central’s English Department has had growing concerns related to the number of unexcused and questionable absences that coincide with the dates on which quizzes, tests, presentations, and major assignments are scheduled.  These absences undermine the integrity of the class as a whole and the ability of individual students to meet their potential.

Due to these concerns, it has become the policy of the department to deny credit for pre-assigned class work when students cannot provide legitimate reasons for absence from class on the due date.  Oversleeping, lack of preparation, impromptu meetings with counselors or other staff, missing the bus, leaving in the middle of the day without parent notification, and general truancy are not legitimate reasons for absence.

Also, because of the increasing number of field trips, class meetings, and other opportunities for experiential learning outside the classroom, it is important to remind your child about the necessity of scheduling make-up work prior to a planned absence from class.  We recognize the importance of these opportunities and want to work with you to foster your student’s ability to manage the many demands on his/her time.

In the event of illness or crisis affecting your family, every opportunity will be given to help your child make up missing work providing that we have been able to make contact with a parent or guardian.  Admit slips are not a sufficient means for determining reason for absence.

We would appreciate your signature on the line below indicating that both you and your child have read and understood this policy concerning unexcused absences and late work.

We greatly appreciate your support as we work together toward the same goal of helping your child be successful during the school year ahead.

Sincerely,

The Central High School English Department

I, ____________________________, have read and understand the expectations for the English Department’s late work policy.  I understand that failure to complete work and/or excessive absences in this course will result in loss of credit.  I further understand that attendance in this class is required.
